chain/choice (n.)
A pair of terms used by some LINGUISTS to refer to the two main AXES of linguistic organization, corresponding to the distinction between SYNTAGMATIC (‘chain’) and PARADIGMATIC (‘choice’). This sense of ‘choice’ is more restricted than that found in some discussions of SEMANTICS, where a widely held conception of MEANINGfulness is based on the ability of the speaker/ hearer to ‘choose’ from a selection of linguistic alternatives, which provide the information-carrying contrasts prerequisite for communication.
