bridge (n.)
A term sometimes used in GRAMMAR to refer to a CLASS of VERBS which allow long-distance EXTRACTION from their sentential COMPLEMENTS. Bridge verbs, such as say, contrast with non-bridge verbs, such as the manner of-speaking verbs whisper, guffaw and sigh, which do not allow such extraction: Who did Mary say that John saw? v. *Who did Mary whisper that John saw?
