A gas is matter in such a condition that it has a tendency to expand indefinitely. Gases have no independent shape, but take the form of the vessel in which they are confined. Great pressure and a low temperature are required to change most gases into the liquid state. The name vapor is given to gaseous matter that is liquid or solid at normal temperatures and pressures. Water vapor is an example of vapor, while atmospheric air is a familiar form of gas, and will be used in studying the phenomena and properties of gases.
