-ing form
A term used in English GRAMMATICAL description to refer to the FORM of the VERB ending in -ing, e.g. going, smoking. Many such forms can be used without change as NOUNS (e.g. smoking is prohibited), and the purpose of the term is to provide a neutral DESCRIPTIVE label for this feature of English, thus avoiding the use of such traditional notions as ‘gerund’, which were originally devised for Latin grammar. In classical TRANSFORMATIONAL GRAMMAR, -ing noun forms were transformationally derived from the related verb forms.
