A term used in SEMANTICS and DISCOURSE ANALYSIS to refer to a process of modelling PRAGMATIC knowledge resources to infer which RHETORICAL relations hold between two given discourse CONSTITUENTS. It represents the rhetorical relations which underlie a TEXT, given the reader’s background knowledge, in relation to a theory of discourse structure.
