instantaneous (adj.)
A term sometimes used in the DISTINCTIVE FEATURE theory of PHONOLOGY, as part of the phrase instantaneous release, referring to a sound released suddenly, without the ACOUSTIC turbulence of a FRICATIVE, as in PLOSIVE CONSONANTS. Its opposite is DELAYED RELEASE, used to characterize AFFRICATES.
