gradation (n.)

In GRAMMAR, the relationship between the forms of ADJECTIVES or ADVERBS when used in the expression of DEGREES of comparison. Languages typically express POSITIVE, EQUATIVE, COMPARATIVE and SUPERLATIVE forms, using MORPHOLOGICAL (e.g. English -er, -est) or SYNTACTIC (e.g. more, most) means.

In HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, the relationship between VERB forms based on variations in the ROOT vowel, as in sing, sang, sung; more explicitly called vowel gradation or ablaut.
