The electric discharge that takes place in the air at ordinary pressure gives rise to a bright light and a sharp report. If the discharge takes place in a partial vacuum, however, the light is very much softened and the discharge is silent. Demonstration. - Hold the bulb of an incandescent lamp between the terminals of a Holtz or Wimshurst machine, and set the machine in motion. The lamp will be filled with a pale glow, which will come and go in flashes as long as the machine is turned.
