The Aurora Borealis and Northern Lights are names given to beautiful light phenomena in the northern part of the northern hemisphere. The general explanation is that the aurora is an electrical discharge taking place in the upper regions of the air, where its density is much less than at the surface of the earth. The position of the aurora and the direction of its streamers seem to be definitely connected with the magnetic condition of the earth, the streamers centering at the north magnetic pole, as reported by Arctic explorers.
