is another very interesting light effect. It is obtained by drawing the terminals of a machine two or three inches apart. The distinct sparks will then cease and the discharge will take the form of Fig. 1. Near the positive terminal the discharge is bright, like an ordinary spark, but about half an inch away it branches out and becomes a purple glow until the negative pole is reached, where there are a number of bright points.
