In the book Kifayat al-Athar, it is narrated on the authority of Ammar that he said:
When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) approached the time of his death, he summoned Ali (peace be upon him) and spoke to him privately for a long time. Then he said:
“O Ali, you are my successor and my heir. Allah has granted you my knowledge and understanding. When I die, hidden grudges will emerge in the hearts of certain people, and your right will be usurped.”
Fatimah wept, and al-Hasan and al-Husayn also wept. The Prophet said to Fatimah:
“O Mistress of Women, why are you weeping?”
She replied, “O my father, I fear that I will be left vulnerable and neglected after you.”
He said, “Rejoice, O Fatimah! You will be the first among my family to join me. Do not weep or grieve, for you are the Mistress of the Women of Paradise, your father is the master of the prophets, your cousin (Ali) is the best of successors, your two sons are the masters of the youths of Paradise, and from the lineage of al-Husayn, Allah will bring forth nine Imams who are purified and infallible. Among us is the Mahdi of this nation.”
Then he turned to Ali and said:
“O Ali, no one other than you shall perform my ritual washing and shrouding.”
Ali (peace be upon him) said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, who will hand me the water? You are a heavy man, and I will not be able to turn your body by myself.”
He replied, “Gabriel will be with you, and al-Fadl will hand you the water.”
