Dark chocolate is considered the most beneficial type of chocolate for health, because it contains a small amount of sugar and a high percentage of cocoa.
Dr. Margarita Amelichkina, a gastroenterologist, told Gazeta.Ru that chocolate containing milk, especially white chocolate, is the least beneficial for health because it contains a low percentage of cocoa and a large amount of sugar.
She says: "Sweetened chocolate can be a good alternative for someone who is trying to reduce the calories he eats. But it is not recommended to eat a lot of it because of the side effects of these sweeteners. For example, consuming an excessive amount of the common sugar substitute sorbitol can cause bloating, nausea, and diarrhea."
According to her, it is not recommended to eat more than 30 grams of dark chocolate or 15-20 grams of milk chocolate per day.
She confirms: “When you eat too much chocolate, the risk of high levels of sugar and saturated fat in the diet increases, which over time can lead to weight gain, and the development of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and liver disease.”
The doctor explains that it is not recommended to give chocolate to children under three years old, as well as people who suffer from diabetes or allergies. Those who suffer from high blood pressure should eat chocolate with caution because it contains caffeine.
