Scientists have revealed a diet they say is the secret to a longer life and a lower death rate if followed.
They explained in a recent study that healthy, low-fat diets reduce mortality rates in middle-aged and elderly people, while unhealthy, low-carbohydrate diets increase these rates.
Previously, short-term clinical trials provided evidence that low-carb (LCD) and low-fat (LFD) diets can provide benefits for weight loss and heart health.
Now, a study recently published in the Journal of Internal Medicine investigated the impact of these dietary practices on life expectancy in middle-aged and older adults.
Low-carb diets, such as the Atkins diet, the Paleo diet, and the ketogenic, or "keto" diet, focus on reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing them with proteins and healthy fats.
Conversely, low-fat diets, such as the Ornish diet and the DASH diet, aim to reduce consumption of high-fat foods, with an emphasis on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
In the study of 371,159 individuals ages 50 to 71, 165,698 deaths occurred over an average follow-up of 23.5 years.
