The discovery of a huge galaxy 25 million light-years away

Astronomers, using the James Webb telescope, discovered a huge galaxy about 25 million light-years away.

The researchers say that the galaxy, known as GS-9209, formed about 600 to 800 million years after the Big Bang, and is the oldest of its kind discovered so far.

Lead researcher Dr Adam Carnal, from the University of Edinburgh's School of Physics and Astronomy, said: "The James Webb Space Telescope has already shown that galaxies were forming much more and earlier than we would have expected during the first billion years of cosmic history."

He added: "This work gives us the first detailed look at the properties of these galaxies, with a detailed graph of the history of their formation, the fact that we also see a very massive black hole in this galaxy called the Quiet Galaxy."

The researchers found that despite being about 10 times smaller than the Milky Way, GS-9209 has a similar number of stars to our galaxy.
