Vowels TOMORROW, ORANGE

The stressed vowel in these classes was formerly produced with , the LOT or START vowel, throughout the South. It still is for words in which the /r/ is followed by a vowel in an open syllable, such as tomorrow and sorry. However, for words in which the /r/ is followed by a vowel in a closed syllable, such as orange, foreign, and horrible, there is a trend toward [o], the FORCE/NORTH vowel. This trend appears stronger in some areas (e.g., Texas and Virginia) than in others (e.g., the Carolinas).
