In Dublin English, and indeed in traditional east-coast varieties of Irish English in general, the vowel in the MOUTH lexical set has a front starting point, either [æ] or [ε] . A realization as [au] is more conservative in Dublin, and in rural areas it is traditionally typical of the south-west and west of Ireland, but is being replaced by the fronted realization in the speech of the younger generation.
