In PSYCHOLINGUISTICS and NEUROLINGUISTICS, the sequence of PROCESSING stages which have to be postulated to explain how speakers retrieve words from their mental LEXICON. Factors influencing lexical access include word frequency, age of ACQUISITION, NEIGHBOURHOOD, and STRESS pattern, as well as the linguistic CONTEXT in which the word appears. In studies of aphasia, difficulties of lexical access are usually called ‘word-finding problems’.
