equi NP deletion

A RULE in classical TRANSFORMATIONAL GRAMMAR, usually abbreviated to Equi, which deletes a SUBJECT NOUN PHRASE from a COMPLEMENT CLAUSE in a SENTENCE when it is CO-REFERENTIAL with another noun phrase in the main clause of the same sentence. An example is John wants to see the film, where the underlying subject of see is John. In later approaches, this transformation was eliminated, and these constructions, along with RAISING constructions, were referred to as CONTROL sentences. In GOVERNMENT-BINDING THEORY, the missing subject is analyzed as PRO.
