Classification
is a feature of STRUCTURALIST linguistics, where PHONES were classified into PHONEMES, MORPHS into MORPHEMES, etc. The perceived limitations of this TAXONOMIC approach to language provided a main argument for the development of GENERATIVE linguistics. However, the notion of a NATURAL CLASS is central to some models of PHONOLOGY; for example, in FEATURE geometry, features of the same kind are grouped together under CLASS NODES.
