Yes–No questions in Quechua are marked by a clitic particle=chu. If this clitic attaches to the verb, as in (30b), the entire proposition is being questioned. But often the clitic attaches to another element in the sentence, as in (30c). In this case the constituent which hosts the clitic is the focal element of the question: the rest of the proposition is assumed to be true, and the questioner is asking only whether this particular piece of information is correct.
In alternative questions (31a, b), both alternatives are marked with the Yes–No clitic; the conjunction o ‘or’ may optionally appear between them. Confirmation tag questions (31c) are formed merely by adding the word aw ‘yes,’ spoken with rapidly rising intonation, to the end of a declarative sentence.
In content questions, the question word normally occurs at the beginning of the sentence, and is marked by another interrogative clitic. This Wh-clitic has two variant forms: =taq and =raq. If the question word is part of a larger constituent (e.g. ‘how much bread’ in (32d)), the Wh-clitic attaches to the end of the entire constituent and never to the question word itself (32e).
