In order to show the great compressibility of gases, it is only necessary to apply force to an air-tight piston moving in a cylinder closed at one end. It can be shown in a very simple way by pushing the open end of a long test tube below the surface of water. It will be found that the deeper the tube is thrust into the water, the higher the water rises within it; and the more, the air is compressed, the greater is the pressure required to force the tube into the water.
