These may be neutralized before coda-/l/.
These last three can lead to homophony among poll, pole, pull, Paul. This leads to a minimum of a six-vowel monophthongal system before /l/: three long and three short vowels (ignoring the diphthongs). Individual speakers may, of course, have more contrasts than this, depending on their age, gender, ethnicity and so on, but none will have the full set of contrasts found in Received Pronunciation (RP).
