translatology (n.)
In APPLIED LINGUISTICS, the study of translation, subsuming both interpretation of oral DISCOURSE and translation (in a narrow sense) of written discourse. The process of transferring an oral message from one LANGUAGE to another at the moment of utterance is variously known as simultaneous interpretation or simultaneous translation. The oral transference of a written message from one language to another is sight translation.
