specialization (n.)
A suggested defining property of SEMIOTIC SYSTEMS, such as human LANGUAGE, referring to the extent to which the use of a signal and the behavior it evokes are directly linked. Animal communication is said to lack specialization, in that a signal triggers a behavior; language, by contrast, is highly specialized, as the behavioral consequences of using a LINGUISTIC signal are less predictable (and often unpredictable).
