polylectal (adj.)

A term used by some SOCIOLINGUISTS to refer to a proposed MODEL of GRAMMAR which would account for many of the VARIETIES (LECTS) of LANGUAGE used by the individual (and, by extension, in the community as a whole). The contrast intended is with grammars which ignore regional and social variations, and which analyze language as if it were in a hypothetical homogeneous state. A further contrast can be drawn with a PANLECTAL grammar, in which all varieties would be taken into account.
