cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation A pervasive ‘sea’ of microwave radiation emanating almost uniformly from every direction in the universe, which dates back to the moment of recombination. This radiation is the ‘echo’ of the Big Bang, predicted by Gamow, Alpher and Herman in 1948, and detected by Penzias and Wilson in 1965. Originating in the heat of the Big Bang, it has since been stretched from infrared to microwave wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. The COBE satellite measured variations in the CMB radiation.
