The protective coloring of quail, zebras, and many other animals makes them difficult to distinguish from their native landscapes. In the World War a similar principle was extensively applied in "camouflage"- the painting or screening of cannon, ships, and other things to conceal them from observation by the enemy. In the case of merchant ships, however, it was found more feasible to use the deceptive "dazzle" system of camouflage. (See frontispiece.)
