is an instrument for the production and study of the spectra from different sources. It has three essential parts, shown in diagram in Fig. 1.

The collimator C' is provided with a slit at the end nearest the light L, and a lens so arranged that the light will pass from the collimator to the prism in parallel lines. The prism l is fixed in such a position that the refracted beam passes through it and emerges in the direction of PT. The telescope T is movable, and can be focused on any ray that emerges from the prism. A general view of one form of the instrument is shown in Fig. 2.
