The process of electrotyping is used to make copies of type, medals, or other objects. The object to be copied is thoroughly cleaned and a mold is taken from it in wax or plaster of Paris. A careful dusting of the surface with some conducting substance, as graphite, is necessary; then the mold is suspended in the proper solution by a wire from the anode of a battery, the current is turned on, and the deposit begins. When the coating is thick enough so that it can be taken from the mold without bending, it is removed and backed by melted lead or type metal.
