Halos and Sun Dogs
Another phenomenon often seen is the reflection of light from hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere. The reflection is seen at an angle of 22° from the sun. If the ice crystals are randomly oriented then we get a complete halo as seen in Figure (1). If the crystals are falling with their flat planes predominately horizontal, we only see the two pieces of the halo at each side of the sun, seen in Figure (2). These little pieces of rainbow are known as “sun dogs”.
