Richard Gwilt's father was William Gwilt.

Richard Gwilt attended George Watson's College, Edinburgh where he was an excellent pupil. In July 1913 he was awarded a George Watson's College Bursary entitling him to free tuition in session 1913-14. In 1917, at the age of sixteen, he was appointed to the Edinburgh Life Assurance Company. Then in 1922 he joined the Scottish Widows' Fund and Life Assurance Society, remaining with them for the rest of his career.

In 1947 Gwilt was appointed General Manager and Actuary at Scottish Widows who then made the following announcement:-

The directors [of the Scottish Widows' Fund and Life Assurance Society] appointed, with the title of Secretary, Mr Richard Lloyd Gwilt, F.F.A., F.I.A., who joined the Society's service in 1922 and had been deputy secretary since November 1934. From our knowledge and experience of Mr Gwilt's ability and capacity we are confident that he is well fitted to discharge the important duties of this responsible post.

Gwilt was a fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries, elected in 1922, and of the Institute of Actuaries, elected in 1923. He served as President of the Faculty from 1952 to 1954. He was a member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, joining the Society in June 1925. He was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 3 March 1941, his proposers being Sir Ernest M Wedderburn,Sir Edmund T Whittaker, A Graham Donald, James P Kendall.

An obituary, written by J M Ross, appears in the Royal Society of Edinburgh Year Book 1973, pages 34-35. 

In 1926 he married Marjory Mair; they had three sons and a daughter. The birth of one of their sons was announced as follows:-
