Conceptual shifts in the science of grammar

Chomsky’s work in linguistics over the past forty-one years has resulted in a number of fundamental changes in our conception of grammatical theory its scope and practice. The way in which Chomsky’s early work diverged from that of his teacher and mentor, Zellig Harris, provides one interesting and important case study Another concerns the shift in focus from systems of rules to systems of grammatical principles, and the related shift of emphasis from derivations to representations, both of which occurred during the 1970s and crystallized in Chomsky 1981. Most recently, Chomsky has attempted to give a more general interpretation to the interaction of rules and principles in Universal Grammar (UG) in terms of language design, and has demonstrated how this interpretation constitutes a minimalist programme for linguistic theory. In addition to opening new lines of investigation, this work promises to reshape our understanding of the language faculty in essential ways.
