Mutation
MUTATION refers to a change in the quality of one or more phonemes in the base form. Vowel mutation is relatively common, and is often referred to by the more specific term ABLAUT. German provides many examples, both in nominal forms (singular vs. plural, similar to the English goose/geese) and in the paradigms of the “strong” verbs. A few of the many patterns of ablaut in verb stems are shown in (8). Of course, similar examples are found in English as well: sing/sang, drink/drank, swim/swam, run/ran, eat/ate, etc. These examples are interesting because the change in vowel quality itself is the marker for past tense; at least superficially, there appears to be no past tense affix involved.
One of the most famous examples of consonant mutation is found in Welsh:
