DELAY VS DEVIANCE
An important issue in discussion of language impairment is whether a condition such as deafness causes language acquisition to be delayed relative to infants who are unaffected by the condition. A second issue is whether the acquisition process deviates from that observed in more typical conditions. Deviance (an unfortunate but widely used term) can take the form of a different order of acquisition for particular features of language or the emergence of non-standard forms and concepts in the acquirer’s language. Comparisons are not usually made with infants of the same chronological age of the subjects studied, but with those at the same stage of linguistic development.
