Provision of positive support Case study
Claire had settled into a mainstream secondary school with only a few minor difficulties that the school had worked with her to solve. However, the school and the carers had noticed that on Thursday mornings Claire had been attempting to miss school or had not attended her lessons when she was taken to school. After discussions with the designated teacher, Claire and the carers it was found that Claire had to change for PE in front of all the other girls. Due to past experiences Claire was finding this extremely difficult to cope with. The school felt that they could not allow Claire to change individually in a private room as it would be seen as providing preferential treatment. It was therefore decided that she would wear the PE kit under the school uniform on that morning, meaning that she would only have to take off her outer garments in public. Changing back was able to be coped with using skillful maneuvers!
