In the year 4/625, Fatima bint Asad (a), the mother of Ali (a), passed away. She had cared for and nurtured the Prophet (s) during his early years, assuming the role of a devoted and selfless mother figure to him. She was among the early Muslims who migrated to Medina and earned continuous honor and esteem from the Prophet (s). He held her in high regard and affectionately referred to her as “mother.”
While stating that Fatima bint Asad (a) was like a mother to him, the Prophet (s) dedicated his own turban and garment for use as her burial shroud. He personally led the funeral prayer for her and recited 40 takbirs. The Prophet (s) himself descended into the grave of Fatima bint Asad (a) and placed some soil into it. Witnessing this extraordinary act, Ammar b. Yasir was filled with curiosity and approached the Prophet (s) to inquire about the reason behind his actions. In response to Ammar’s inquiry, the Prophet (s) conveyed, “She deserves this … O Ammar! When I glanced towards my right side, I beheld 40 rows of angels, and for each row, I recited one takbir. … In her grave, I supplicated to God, beseeching Him to keep Faṭima covered on the Day of Resurrection. … O Ammar! By God, I witnessed two radiant lights at her feet, accompanied by two dedicated angels who will continuously seek forgiveness for her until the Day of Resurrection.”
According to a particular account, after the burial of Fatima bint Asad (a), the Prophet (s) lingered by her grave and spoke certain words. Upon his return, his companions approached him and remarked, “O Messenger of God! Today you did something that we have not witnessed from you before.” In response, the Prophet (s) explained that Fatima bint Asad (a) had expressed concerns about the constriction of the grave. In order to alleviate her worries, he stayed by her grave for a while. Then, the Prophet (s) revealed, “She was questioned about God and His messenger, and she responded. However, when she was asked about her Imam, she hesitated to answer. Therefore, at her gravesite, I called out loudly, ‘Your son, your son, your son’.”
