Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) held a unique place in the heart of his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, that none of his sons or grandsons ever attained, despite them being the distinguished leaders of Mecca. It is narrated that Abdul Muttalib would sit in the courtyard of the Kaaba on a special carpet laid out for him, surrounded by the prominent figures of Quraysh, its chiefs, and his sons. Whenever he caught sight of his grandson, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he would instruct those around him to make way so that the boy could come forward and sit beside him on his personal carpet. This special affection shown by the chief of Quraysh further elevated Muhammad's (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) standing among the people of Quraysh, in addition to the nobility of his character, which was evident from an early age.
The Holy Qur'an refers to this period of orphanhood, during which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was under the care of his Lord, in the verse:
"Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?" (Qur'an 93:6)
The experience of orphanhood often plays an important role in shaping a person's character, preparing them for maturity, self-reliance, and the ability to endure hardships, confront difficulties, and remain patient in the face of adversity. In this way, Allah Himself prepared His chosen Prophet to bear the responsibilities of the future and to carry the great divine message that awaited his full maturity and perfection. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) alluded to this reality when he said:
"My Lord disciplined me, and He perfected my discipline."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had not yet reached the age of eight when he was struck by a third great trial: the loss of his noble grandfather, Abdul Muttalib. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) grieved deeply over his grandfather's death, with sorrow no less profound than that which he felt at the passing of his mother. It is reported that he wept bitterly as he followed his grandfather's funeral procession to its final resting place. He never forgot him, for Abdul Muttalib had cared for him with the utmost devotion and had recognized the signs of his future prophethood. It is narrated that when someone once attempted to move young Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) away while he was still a small child, Abdul Muttalib said:
"Leave my son alone, for sovereignty has indeed come to him."
