At the outset of the Prophet’s clandestine mission, ʿAlī (a) stood by his side. As per certain narrations, owing to the persecutions inflicted upon Muslims by the polytheistic Quraysh, the Prophet (s) shifted the center of his covert invitations to Islam to the house of al-Arqam b. Abī l-Arqam, one of the early Muslims. There, in secrecy, he promoted and disseminated the teachings of Islam. ʿAlī (a) accompanied him in al-Arqam’s house.
Imam ʿAlī (a) played a pivotal role in facilitating Abū Dhar al-Ghifārī’s conversion to Islam by arranging a meeting between him and the Prophet (s). Upon receiving news of the Prophet’s mission and his new religion, Abū Dhar al-Ghifārī clandestinely entered Mecca. Lacking acquaintances in the city, he spent several days within Masjid al-Haram, seeking a means to establish communication with the Prophet (s). One day, ʿAlī (a) noticed Abū Dhar, recognizing him as a stranger in the city. He kindly invited Abū Dhar to his own house, offering him hospitality as his guest. Throughout that period, ʿAlī (a) did not inquire about the purpose of Abū Dhar’s visit to Mecca, and Abū Dhar himself did not bring up the matter either. The following day, Abū Dhar returned to Masjid al Ḥarām, where he coincidentally encountered ʿAlī (a) once more. ʿAlī (a) remarked, “It appears that you have not yet found your accommodation.” “No,” Abū Dhar replied. “What is it that you seek, and what has brought you to this city?” ʿAlī (a) asked, leading Abū Dhar to a secluded corner of the mosque. “If you promise to keep it confidential, I will tell you,” Abū Dhar replied. “I promise,” ʿAlī (a) agreed. Abū Dhar proceeded to disclose to ʿAlī (a) that he had heard about Muḥammad’s claim to Prophethood and had come to the city with the intention of meeting him. “Your wish will be fulfilled as I am heading there now,” ʿAlī (a) said, and continued, “Follow me and enter any alley I go into. If I notice anyone suspicious, I will position myself next to a wall and pretend to be repairing my shoes.” Together, they made their way to the Prophet (s), who then introduced Islam to Abū Dhar. As a result, Abū Dhar embraced Islam through the intercession of Imam ʿAlī (a).
