One of the acceptable actions is to push people who want to live through a project to work, as well as encouraging those who have money to establish institutions and create jobs for strong individuals and such people, in the opinion of Islam, achieve great success and a good life.
Ali bin Shuaib said: I entered upon Abu al-Hassan al-Rida (peace be upon him) and he said to me: “O Ali, who is the best person in terms of living?” I said, “You, my master, know more about it than I do.” He (peace be upon him) said: “O Ali, whoever improves the living of others.”
Work and economic activity encourage self-reliance, strengthen the personality, and grant a person pride and honor. Striving to obtain the necessities of life is evidence of knowing one’s social duty and not needing others.
Work and struggle to secure an honorable life are a cause for pride and a factor in familial and social understanding. The person who works hard and strives to secure his life and the lives of his wife and children, will have a great reward from Allah Almighty, and will be honored and respected by his family and society.
As for those who refuse to work, and are a burden on others in their lives, such people live in humiliation and contempt, and lack any value in the eyes of their family and society, and people look at them with contempt.
The truth is that unemployment and being a burden on society are nothing but the killing of the personality and the crushing of human honor. A strong person who can earn a living through a project, but refrains from doing so, is destroying his social value and pushing himself towards the abyss of downfall.
When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) looked at a man and liked him, he would say: “Does he have a profession?” If they said: “No,” he would say: “He has fallen from my eyes.”
It is not enough for parents to engage in legitimate work in order to secure the living requirements of their families. Rather, they must encourage their young sons to strive and work, and consult together in choosing work. This work in itself is one of the conditions for creating harmony and good understanding in the family environment.
