advantages & disadvantages of putting parents in nursing homes

Parents are the best things that happen to us. God bless them all.

During our childhoods, they take care of us, they pay everything for us, they spoil us and are there to guide us.

During our teenage and young adult years, they tell us what’s right and wrong and become our best friends.

However, as we grow, they are also growing and old people are vulnerable to most diseases. Some start to develop mental illnesses such as dementia or even become physically disabled. The care for them gets more and more difficult and that sometimes causes discomfort for the current generation.

Another factor, aside from the physical and mental illnesses, is the difference in generation.

For example, if you’re 16 and your father is 75, he might not allow you to do something that was not normal back in his days, or vice versa, he might insist that you do something that no one does anymore. They become old school and are not up to pace with the current trends.

This change of generation and in addition to the mental/physical state the old person is going through sometimes causes their own children to be tired of it, unfortunately, and therefore leading to taking them to nursery homes.

Unfortunately, many people will have to make the tough decision about whether or not to put their loved one(s) in a nursing home. Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of nursing homes for your aged parents.

Advantages of Nursing Homes

  • Trained staff can provide expert medical attention and round-the-clock care maybe better than you if you are busy with work all the time.
  • Nursing homes are often staffed with dieticians and nutritionists who can ensure proper nutrition for optimal health.
  • Facilities often provide social activities and a sense of community to patients.
  • Nursing homes are evaluated and these reports are available through Medicare, so you can make sure that your loved one is staying at a safe nursing home.
  • Relying on a nursing home will put fewer demands on family members who may not have the time or resources to care for their relative,

Disadvantages of Nursing Homes

  • You are missing the parent(s) in your house. Coming back from work and seeing your parent is a great feeling.
  • Several cases of abuses have been recorded. So it is not always safe and the best environment for your parents to be in.
  • Expensive. Many people simply cannot afford to pay for constant care. As of 2012, the national average for a private room was $248 per day which equals $90,520 per year.
  • No one will care for your parent as much as you. While most nursing homes provide superior services, you have to be careful about where you place your loved one. According to some reports, 90% of nursing homes are understaffed, which increases the potential for accidents.
  • Depending on an individual’s condition, a nursing home can increase a sense of isolation and loneliness, especially among patients with dementia.
  • You may have to travel lengthy distances to visit your loved one if there isn’t a nursing facility near your home.
