The Holy Prophet was interested in eradicating illiteracy and spreading the ability of reading and writing among Muslims, and after the Battle of Badr, the Muslims captured a number of polytheists, and the Prophet ordered that teaching reading and writing for ten Muslims should be the price of freedom for the captive.
