Methodology in Cognitive Linguistics

What Cognitive Linguistics actually does

So how exactly does Cognitive Linguistics fare? Three points should be made to get an adequate and nuanced picture of the situation. First, from very early on, there has been a permanent presence in Cognitive Linguistics of the major forms of empirical methodology. Second, there is a growing interest in such an approach. But third, the move towards a large-scale application of empirical methods is far from completed. The overall picture, then, will have to be a mixed one: Cognitive Linguistics has a promising theoretical background that is conducive to empirical research, and it broadly seems to have the intention to live up to that promise, but it still has quite a way to go before it entirely fulfills it. Whether that is seen as the glass being half full or rather as it being half empty, is probably just a matter of mood and mentality. However, if we can agree on the importance of introducing empirical methods in Cognitive Linguistics, we should not just identify what has already been achieved and what contributes positively to the desired developments, but we should also pinpoint the possible impediments to a further evolution in the direction of empirical methods.
