What is the Hijab?
The Hijab is greatly known as a symbol for Islam. Hijab in Islam is actually for men and women but today we will be discussing the Hijab for women. Why has Islam made it mandatory for Muslim women to wear the Hijab? Is it not oppressing her and limiting her way of expressing herself? Unfortunately this is a misconception that is quite popular in the western society.
When Allah commands us to do something, it is always for our benefit and advantage; we must clearly understand this concept. So when Allah commands women to wear the Hijab it’s for their benefit and advantage, women are benefitting from the Hijab not Allah. Allah is not in need of anyone wearing the Hijab. In the Holy Quran Allah says “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, [a list of relatives], [household servants], or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.”
Men, whether they confess it or not, are slaves of lust and desire. Hijab protects women from such men; it symbolizes that she has been sanctified to one man only and is off-limit to all others. Hijab contributes to the stability and preservation of marriage and family by eliminating the chances of extramarital affairs. Finally, it compels men to focus on the real personality of the woman and de-emphasizes her physical beauty. It puts the woman in control of strangers’ reaction to her.
Neither does the hijab prevent a woman from acquiring knowledge or from contributing to the betterment of human society. Historically speaking in Islam many women have contributed. This includes Sayeda Khadeja the Prophet’s wife.
The first Muslim person to be martyred in Muslim history was a woman by the name of Sumayya, the wife of Yasir and the mother of ‘Ammar. She was killed along with her husband for refusing to renounce Islam.
Lady Falimatu ’z-Zahra’, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad, was a beacon of light and a source of guidance for the women of her time. She faithfully stood by her husband, Imam ‘Ali, in his struggle for his right of caliphate, and strongly protested against the first violation of the right of inheritance for daughters in Islam.
Another exemplarily is Sayeda Zainab (AS), after all the calamities that she witnessed on the day of Ashura, she stood bravely in castle of Yazid and said her famous speech. She was very influential in bringing about the awakening among the people to stand up against the tyranny of the rulers.
Hijab is not a symbol of oppression. Women are oppressed because of socio-economic reasons even in countries where women have never heard about hijab. On the contrary, the practice of displaying pictures of almost naked women in the commercials, billboards, and in the entertainment industry in the west is a true symbol of oppression.
Islam greatly respects women and has given them a very high status. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH), addressing the Muslims on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, warned them against the values which he feared would be neglected after him, and referred to woman as one of the important issues about whom he said: "Observe your duty to Allah in respect to the women, and treat them well."
