voice qualifier

A term used by some linguists as part of their analysis of the PARALINGUISTIC features of the voice; also called a vocal qualifier. Examples are the expression of various emotional states, such as anger or sarcasm, by means of vocal effects such as a ‘harsh’ or ‘tense’ quality – effects which are sometimes specific to individual languages. The term VOICE QUALITY is sometimes used in a general sense to include these effects.
